Curtain up: Enjoy free tickets for two famous Berlin theatres

Deutsches Theater Berlin
Aesthetic diversity, contemporary drama, complicity and interest in the social contexts of the present characterise the work of artistic director Iris Laufenberg. In order to anchor DT as a theatre of the many in urban society, DT Kontext is designing a programme (readings, discussions, film screenings) that also offers links to current productions beyond the stage. And DT Jung* invites everybody, regardless of age, to get to know the world of theatre at their own pace. Find out more:

Der Schimmelreiter / Hauke Haiens Tod
Based on the novella by Theodor Storm and the novel by Andrea Paluch and Robert Habeck
DIRECTED BY Jan-Christoph Gockel

What opportunities can be created by turning to the demons of the past to face an uncertain future? In 2001, Andrea Paluch and Robert Habeck created a new reading of Theodor Storm’s novella in their novel Hauke Haiens Tod, examining its significance for our present times. Jan-Christoph Gockel combines both texts and explores their demonic potential with ensemble members of Deutsches Theater and RambaZamba Theater.

»Yerma« at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz

A journalist and her husband spend their first evening in their new home and share their wishes for a child over champagne. Although John is surprised, he can also imagine a life as a father. But this normal wish turns into a nightmare. Over the next five years, the woman struggles in vain to get pregnant. She organises John’s trips around her fertile days and shares her problems in her lifestyle blog. Her unfulfilled desire to have children puts a strain on her relationship with her pregnant sister and her mother, who never wanted children. Over time, her desire to have children becomes an obsession and dominates her life, leading to tragedy.

The Schaubühne was founded in 1962 by a group of students in Berlin Kreuzberg. It has been located at the western end of Kurfürstendamm since 1981 when it adopted its current name of the »Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz«.
The Schaubühne’s permanent ensemble of around 30 actors is at the core of its work. The theatre’s repertoire includes titles from the worldwide canon of drama as well as contemporary plays by internationally recognised writers which – with well over 100 world and German premieres during the last 22 years – have been a central part of the theatre’s output. Thomas Ostermeier has been a member of the Schaubühne’s artistic leadership since 1999, and in 2009 he became artistic director of the theatre.
