Young Euro Classic
August 3 – August 20
2018 Konzerthaus Berlin
Nelson Mandela and Leonard Bernstein: two charismatic personalities who would have celebrated their 100th birthdays this year lend special brilliance to the 2018 edition of Young Euro Classic. Now in its 19th season, the unique youth orchestra festival remains true to its mission of introducing Berlin audiences to new ideas, new works and new faces. From London, the Southbank Sinfonia makes its debut, just like the Youth Chamber Orchestra St. Petersburg from Russia and NYO Jazz from New York with its special guest, Grammy winner Dianne Reeves. The international attractiveness of Young Euro Classic is proven by additional guests from all over the world, including the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the Auckland Youth Orchestra and the Georgian Sinfonietta from Tiflis.
Nelson Mandela is the focus of the opening concert on August 3: the MIAGI Youth Orchestra from South Africa, an absolute audience favourite, is sure to set the festival sparks flying at Berlin’s Konzerthaus on Gendarmenmarkt. The spectacular finale features the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra performing music by “Lennie”, its legendary founder. The remaining programmes are equally sure to arouse curiosity: a multitude of world and German premieres, large-format orchestral works by Richard Strauss, jazz, ballet – and of course the evergreen symphonies of Beethoven. Anyone seeking a more European note is sure to find their personal highlight among the National Youth Orchestras of Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Romania or Ukraine.
