The Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg, or ONJ Luxembourg, has existed for only five years – and makes its debut this summer at Young Euro Classic. No less than 25 nations are represented on the roster of the ONJ Luxembourg, which meets twice a year for intense working periods. For their Berlin concert, the young musicians delve deep into the atmospheric orchestral worlds of Russian composers. In Sergei Rachmaninov’s rarely-performed Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, the sought-after pianist Joseph Moog will play the solo part. After the interval, Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite will be heard, one of the most extravagantly colourful ballet scores ever, with which its composer made a splash prior to World War I. Nor is the ONJ Luxembourg's homeland ignored: a brand-new work by the Luxembourgish composer Hy-Khang Dang opens the concert in its German premiere.
The Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg (ONJ Luxembourg) is a very young ensemble, founded in 2021. Its artistic and musical director is the conductor Pit Brosius. For two orchestra projects a year, approximately 50 to 70 young musicians aged 13 to 30 come together to make musical and human connections and pursue a common goal: making music at the highest level. The ONJ Luxembourg reflects the diversity of Luxembourg, uniting young talents from more than 25 nations. The ONJ Luxembourg is coached by tutors from the professional orchestras in Luxembourg and the Greater Region of Luxembourg / France / Germany. Renowned artists such as the cellist Johannes Moser, the violinist Antje Weithaas and the horn player Felix Klieser have appeared with the young orchestra. The concert in Berlin marks the Young Euro Classic debut of the Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg.
A native of Luxembourg, Pit Brosius studied orchestral conducting and bassoon at the conservatories in Amsterdam and Maastricht and currently teaches conducting at the Conservatoire du Nord in Luxembourg. Before founding the Orchestre National des Jeunes du Luxembourg in 2021, he gathered important experience working on productions at the Leipzig Opera, the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg and the Opéra Saint-Étienne. He also works regularly with the Kammerata Luxembourg and the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg. Pit Brosius is a passionate champion of historically informed performance practice, but also regularly conducts ensembles specialized in contemporary compositions.
Born in Neustadt/Weinstraße in 1987, Joseph Moog received his first piano lessons at the age of four; when he was ten, he became a junior student at the Karlsruhe Music Academy. After further studies in Würzburg and Hanover, the pianist has long become a sought-after guest on many of the world’s concert podiums, appearing in Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart as much as in Amsterdam, Tallinn, Istanbul, New York and Vancouver. Conductors Moog has worked with include Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Matthias Pintscher, Michael Sanderling, Antony Hermus, Markus Poschner, Elias Grandy, Toshiyuko Kamioka and Philippe Entremont. In addition to the core repertoire, the pianist is known for his exploration of the “Belle Époque”, including composers such as Leopold Godowsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Cécile Chaminade, Anton Rubinstein and Moritz Moszkowski. Among his CD productions, recordings of the piano concertos by Brahms, Rubinstein and Max Reger stand out, as do works for saxophone and piano, which he recorded with the saxophone player Andreas Mader.
The Luxembourgish composer Hy-Khang Dang studied saxophone, orchestral conducting and composition at the Conservatories in Brussels and Paris and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His works have been performed by various ensembles, including the Luxembourg Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg and United Instruments of Lucilin. He collaborated with eminent conductors such as Duncan Ward, Marie Jacquot, Simon Proust and Chloé Dufresne. His most recent works have been given first performances by EXAUDI, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart and Vlaams Radiokoor. He has been a London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub Associate, a Britten-Pears Young Artist and a laureate of the Académie Voix Nouvelles. In addition to the work being premiered by ONJ in Berlin, he is also working on compositions for the Fondation Royaumont and the Luxembourg Philharmonic Academy.
