FUTURE NOW - Tomorrow's Traditions Today
The festival within the festival as part of Young Euro Classic
📅 Every festival weekend
🕔 5 pm, Werner-Otto-Hall and Französische Friedrichstadtkirche
Time for the future: At “FUTURE NOW – Tomorrow’s Traditions Today”, six ensembles from Bolivia, Indonesia, Afghanistan (in exile), India, Gambia and the Sámi Region interpret the musical traditions of their homelands, illuminating the future of art music going back thousands of years.
Electric guitar meets joik, Sámi chanting, indigenous instruments make the Andes resound, konnakol vocalism fills the Konzerthaus with the rhythms of South Indian vocal percussion. The festival within the festival presents the power of musical innovation from various cultural perspectives – and how the future of music is shaped today!
One feature that is new and unique is a spontaneous encounter without scores between the FUTURE NOW ensembles and musicians of the orchestras performing at Young Euro Classic. In these encounters, a musical dialogue without words unfolds among the young musicians, their cultural backgrounds and musical traditions. Connections are discovered and shared futures created through the medium of music – in the context of selected evening concerts, always on the day before the ensemble’s own concert!

An ensemble concert in the Werner-Otto-Hall that brings the Andes to life! Four young musicians play - literally - with tradition and modernity.
The traditional Joik singing form of the indigenous Sámi in northern Fennoscandia is combined by the Sápmi duo with the modern sounds of electric guitar and synthesiser. The concert takes place at the Werner-Otto-Hall.
Gamelan Degung with a modern twist! With contemporary and traditional compositions, the Simpay Panaratas ensemble from West Java fills the Werner-Otto-Hall with the dreamy sounds of traditional instruments from the Indonesian islands.
A concert that moves: with music, dance and complementary dialogue, young Afghan musicians talk about resistance, hope and freedom.
